A court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has found a 400-level student from the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, named Damain Okoligwe, guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Justina Otuene.

The court decided to give Okoligwe the death penalty by hanging because he killed and cut up his girlfriend, Justina.

Okoligwe, who was studying Petrochemical Engineering at UNIPORT, killed his girlfriend. She was a 300-level student in the Biochemistry Department at the same university. The crime happened on October 20th, 2023, at his apartment in Mgbuoba, which is in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

Okoligwe had cut up her body and put the pieces into a wheelbarrow, ready to throw them away, when he was caught.

In his ruling, Friday, the trial judge, Justice Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu, said the prosecution showed clearly that Okoligwe met all the requirements to be convicted of murder.

Nsirim-Nwosu called Okoligwe’s actions meant to harm, planned, and carried out in a cold and cruel way.
She said there was no conflict in the evidence, so it was clear that Okoligwe did commit the crime.

The judge ordered that Okoligwe be hanged by the neck until he is dead.

Outside the court, the prosecutor, Charles Mbaba, said he was happy with the decision, and hoped it would bring peace to the victim‘s family.

He said the judgment will also serve as a deterrent to young people who think short cut is the possible way for survival.
