UPDATED: SENATE APPROVES TINUBU’S REQUEST TO DEPLOY TROOPS TO REPUBLIC OF BENIN

The Senate has agreed to let President Bola Tinubu send Nigerian soldiers to the Republic of Benin to help bring back peace and calm after a failed coup attempt last weekend.
On Tuesday, during a plenary session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement after the lawmakers discussed the request in the Committee of the Whole, as required by section 5, Part 11 of the Constitution.
The Senators all agreed to support the deployment, providing official backing for the regional security action.
Akpabio called the decision a positive move, explaining that problems in one neighboring country can affect the whole region.
He said, “An injury to one is an injury to all.”
He underscored that it is Nigeria’s responsibility to support its Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) partner.
The Senate’s consent letter will be transmitted to President Tinubu immediately.
Tinubu wrote to the Senate asking for their permission to send troops to the Benin Republic. He said Nigeria has a historical duty to help Benin, based on the existing ECOWAS security agreements.
The President said the situation needs “urgent external help” to bring back stability and stop more chaos.
The Benin Republic faced a failed coup on Sunday, when some soldiers announced they were removing President Patrice Talon.
Soldiers who called themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR) went on national TV to say they had met and decided that “Mr. Patrice Talon should no longer be the president of the republic.”

But the country‘s military stopped them and took back control.
Sources close to Talon said, “The regular army is taking back control.
The city of Cotonou and the whole country are completely safe. It’s just a matter of time before everything goes back to normal. The cleanup is moving along smoothly.“
In the wake of the attempted coup, ECOWAS said it will deploy a standby force to the area.
“After consultation among members of the Mediation and Security Council at the level of Heads of State and Government, the Chair of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government has ordered the deployment of elements of the ECOWAS Standby Force to the Republic of Benin with immediate effect,” the regional bloc said.
“The Regional Force shall be made up of troops from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, and the Republic of Ghana.
“The Force shall support the Government and the Republican Army of Benin to preserve constitutional order and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Benin”.
