Gunmen opened fire on football fans after a match in central Mexico on Sunday, killing 11 people and injuring 12 more in a region long plagued by organized crime, local authorities said.

Armed men stormed a community football ground in Salamanca, a city of about 160,000 in Guanajuato state. Ten victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries in hospital. Among the wounded were a woman and a child.

Mayor Cesar Prieto called on the national government to help “restore peace, tranquility, and security” in the city, blaming organized crime groups for the attack.

“We are going through a grave moment, a serious social breakdown. There are criminal groups trying to subdue the authorities,” Prieto said.

The shooting comes amid a spate of violence in Salamanca. On Saturday night, authorities discovered four bags containing human remains in the city, while six people were killed the same day in nearby communities. Last week, a bomb threat was reported at a local Pemex refinery.

Guanajuato, a thriving industrial hub and popular tourist destination, is Mexico’s deadliest state due to gang turf wars, according to official homicide statistics. Much of the violence is linked to the Santa Rosa de Lima gang, which engages in oil theft, and the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations.

A manhunt is underway for the shooters.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the country’s homicide rate fell to its lowest level in a decade in 2025 due to her administration’s national security strategy, though experts have questioned the figures.

Since the 2006 crackdown on cartels, criminal violence — mostly tied to drug trafficking — has claimed more than 480,000 lives in Mexico, with over 120,000 people still missing. Mass graves and unburied body parts continue to be discovered across the country.
