Agency Report

At least 89 people were injured on Sunday after lightning struck near a rally of supporters of Brazil’s former far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, in the capital city of Brasilia, the fire department has said.

Thousands of supporters had gathered in heavy rain to demonstrate in favour of Bolsonaro, who was sentenced last year to 27 years in prison for leading a failed coup attempt following his narrow election defeat.

Footage shared on social media showed crowds holding colourful umbrellas and wearing plastic ponchos moments before a sudden flash of lightning and a loud rumbling sound sent shockwaves through the gathering.

According to the fire department, 89 people were treated at the scene, with 47 of them taken to hospital. Eleven victims were said to have required major medical care.

The rally was organised by Brazilian lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira, who said the gathering was aimed at demanding “amnesty” for Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro is currently being held at the Papuda penitentiary complex in Brasilia. The former president has suffered ongoing health complications stemming from a stabbing attack during the 2018 election campaign.

He was hospitalised for about a week in December following surgery for a groin hernia and treatment for recurring hiccups. Earlier this month, he also underwent medical tests after a fall in prison, although authorities said no serious injuries were detected.
