A joint security team has rescued at least 10 people abducted by kidnappers in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State after engaging the suspects in a gun battle.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the operation was carried out on February 1, 2026, at about 8:00 a.m. in Mai-Laka village along the Bangi–Kotonkoro Road. Security operatives intercepted the kidnappers and exchanged gunfire with them.

The police said sustained pressure from the security team forced the abductors to abandon some of their captives and flee into the surrounding bush.

The rescued victims, who were unharmed, were reported to be from Yauri, Dusai, Dogon-Fadama, and Yabawa villages.

During the operation, security operatives also recovered some of the motorcycles used by the suspected kidnappers.

Abiodun added that clearance operations in the area have been stepped up, with surveillance and monitoring of the axis ongoing to deter further criminal activities.

It will be recalled that the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, had earlier revealed that about 70 kidnap victims from different parts of the state were rescued in Mariga Local Government Area through the combined efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Sarkin-Daji praised the courage and professionalism of the security operatives, noting that their actions led to the neutralisation of several bandits, the arrest of suspects, and the safe rescue of many innocent citizens held in captivity.
