Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has criticised the Federal Government, accusing it of deploying fuel subsidy removal as a tool to shield corruption rather than eliminate it.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Shehu labelled the policy the largest scam, theft, and act of corruption in Nigeria’s history. He drew comparisons between previous fuel subsidy payments and recent expenditure figures released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Shehu noted that fuel subsidy payments for 2021 and 2022 amounted to a combined ₦5.7 trillion, but questioned NNPCL’s claim that ₦17.5 trillion was spent between January and December 2025 on securing oil pipelines.

“Subsidy removal did not curb corruption; it nurtured and protected it,” he stated.

He further argued that the policy has failed to ease Nigeria’s debt burden, pointing out that the country continues to rely heavily on borrowing.

“Despite the so-called subsidy removal, we are still borrowing in order to stop borrowing,” Shehu said.

The commentator also alleged that a small, powerful group is profiting at the expense of the wider population.

“By all indications, a clique, cartel, and cabal are determined to impoverish 250 million people and ultimately destroy Nigeria,” he claimed.

He concluded with a scathing condemnation of what he described as entrenched corruption, calling it a national disgrace.
