Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has disclosed that he turned down Vinicius Jr.’s request to take a second-half penalty against Manchester City.
Valverde had already scored a first-half hat-trick as Madrid dominated the Champions League Round of 16 first leg.
In the second half, Los Blancos were awarded a penalty after Vinicius was fouled by Gianluigi Donnarumma, presenting an opportunity to extend their three-goal lead.

The Brazilian winger had offered the penalty to Valverde, but he declined, and the spot kick was eventually saved by Donnarumma.
Valverde told TNT Sports, “Vini Jr asked me if I wanted to take the penalty.
“Vini is a Real Madrid legend and a great friend. I, along with other teammates, encouraged him to take it.
“Vini missed? These things happen—it’s part of football.”
