LAGOS MANDATES ELEVATOR REGISTRATION AND CERTIFICATION BY MARCH 31

The Lagos State Government has directed building owners, developers, and facility managers to register and certify all elevators by March 31, 2026, warning that non-compliant units will be decommissioned.
The directive was issued on Friday by Lanre Mojola, Director-General and CEO of the Lagos State Safety Commission, who stressed that the government will strictly enforce compliance to prevent avoidable accidents amid a surge in high-rise developments across the city.
“Elevators and other vertical transportation equipment are vital to modern urban infrastructure and must be properly registered and maintained to ensure public safety,” Mojola said.
According to the commission’s safety regulations, all elevators in residential, commercial, and public buildings must be officially registered and certified before operation and throughout their service life.
Building owners who fail to comply face the immediate shutdown and sealing of their properties.
To facilitate compliance, the state has launched a digital platform at www.lasgsafetyreg.com.

The platform enables inspections of new elevator installations before they carry passengers, while existing elevators will be subject to periodic safety audits.
Mojola called on residents and office workers to support the initiative by reporting faulty elevators, poor maintenance, or unregistered lifts via the Commission’s safety hotlines.
He emphasized that public involvement, combined with strict enforcement, is essential to promoting a culture of safety and accountability in Lagos.
The Media reported that several residents of an apartment building on Banana Island were trapped inside an elevator on Monday, prompting concerns about lift safety.
