PREMIER LEAGUE ‘DISAPPOINTED’ IN REFEREES AFTER HUGE VAR ERRORS
The Premier League has hit out at PGMOL saying it is “disappointed” in Saturday’s disastrous afternoon of VAR mistakes from its referees on Saturday.
This comes as a result of several high-profile blunders at the last round of top-flight matches, which has generated widespread criticism from fans, pundits and managers.
In an official statement, the Premier League said: “The Premier League sets high standards and is disappointed that PGMOL fell below those expectations last weekend.
“As a result, the Premier League requested that PGMOL review and explain a number of incidents from the recent match round.
“Following discussions with PGMOL, and yesterday’s Select Group One review meeting, we support PGMOL’s views on addressing these issues to improve performances going forward.”
The clubs most negatively effected by the errors were Arsenal, Brighton, and Chelsea, with PGMOL chief Howard Webb removing blundering duo Lee Mason and John Brooks taken off from duty
In the title-chasing Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Brentford, Ivan Toney’s equaliser was incorrectly allowed to stand despite two offsides in the build-up to the goal.
VAR official Mason failed to draw the correct lines to rule out Bees striker Toney’s late leveller, with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta furious in the aftermath.
PGMOL, the elite referees’ group, has apologised, telling Sportsmail on Tuesday night: “We accept mistakes were made… however, we are encouraged by the way our officials have responded and are confident they will take the learnings forward.’
