On Monday, pilgrims from Lagos State who travelled to Saudi Arabia on a religious pilgrimage left Mecca for Muna to start the main Hajj ceremonies.

One of the months of the Islamic calendar is Dhul-Hijjah, which spans from the ninth to the twelfth of the month.

The journey to Muna started at midnight on Sunday and continued until the early hours of Monday, according to a statement from the Lagos State Muslim Welfare Board signed by Mr. Taofeek Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs.

On Monday, the eighth day of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims will travel to Mount Arafat, also known as Jabal Rahma, in preparation for the ninth day of the month (Tuesday).

Additionally, he stated that on the ninth day, in the evening, pilgrims would leave the Plain of Arafat in order to travel to Musdalifah and observe the two evening prayers (Magrib and Ishai).

Lawal stated that they would gather stones at Musdalifah, have a little break the following day, and then travel to the Jamarat on the tenth day (Wednesday) to throw pebbles at the Shaetan (Satan).

Muslims from all around the world are supposed to sacrifice rams on the tenth day in observance of Eid-ul-Kabir.

According to Alhaji Anofiu Elegushi, the Amir-ul-Hajj, the tossing of pebbles would take place three days in a row, starting on the 10th day of the Dhul-Hijja and ending on the 12th day.

The pilgrims would depart Muna in the evening for Mecca, where they would stay until they were flown back to Nigeria, he continued.

The Board Chairman, Shakiru Ayinde Gafar, stated that equality and perseverance are the main principles Allah meant to teach Muslims throughout the world.

He said that while visiting Muna, Arafat, and Musdalifah, every pilgrim—regardless of status—must don the Ihram, which consists of two pairs of white clothing for men and a long gown for women.

He interprets this to mean that all people are equal in the eyes of Allah and that no one is more important than another.

In every situation they might find themselves in, he urged them to remember the teachings of the Muna and treat everyone equally.

He, however, urged the pilgrims to pray for peace and security in Nigeria, especially the success of the new administration of President Bola Tinubu, as well as the administration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
