MWAPA CELEBRATES 2023 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day of Rural Women, which is usually celebrated every year on October 15th, the Lagos State Ministry of Women affairs and Poverty Alleviation says, it is celebrating the day in recognition of the critical roles and contributions the women play towards improving the agricultural, nutritional, socio-economic growth and eradication of rural poverty in the state.

Hon. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, the Honourable Commissioner, MWAPA, while giving her opening remarks at an event in the Epe area of Lagos on Monday, spoke on the implementation of programmes and initiatives that is aimed at empowering rural women economically.

She added that the Ministry will focus on providing skills training, access to financial services, and promoting entrepreneurship to enable rural women to become active participants in  sustainable economic activities while noting that rural women have long been the backbone of the society, by contributing significantly to agricultural productivity, food security and sustainable development.

“The global food system hinges on the daily work of rural women which contributes to at least 50% of the work force and yet, despite their critical contributions, however, they still suffer gender – inequality such as less assess to Land, credits agricultural inputs and even obtain low prices for their crops,” she said.

The Commissioner however acknowledged that rural women face unique challenges and are dispropriately affected by the global cost-of-living crisis.

She commended the efforts of the various organizations and individuals who have worked to support and uplift the movement while informing them the government will remain committed to amplifying and ensuring that women are well provided for with the neccessary tools and resources to confront the cost-of-living crisis.
