Abuja Airport N61.2b Terminal Opens February 2018
The new international terminal building at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja will be ready by February 2018.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), told the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Aviation that was at the airport to inspect facilities that the work is already 80 percent done.
The Project Manager of CCECC in charge of the new terminal building, Mr. Kelvin Lee, told the legislators the company will finish work on the terminal building by February.
He, however, told the legislators that the building will not be operational until an upgrade is done on the power and water facilities as the existing plants cannot serve the new terminal building effectively.
He explained that if the necessary funds are provided, the power plants and upgrade should be ready before end of 2018 so that the airport can be operational.
“I have told the National Assembly members that the water and power capacity needs to be upgraded. They also need to relocate the control tower and fire stations. To commission this building, about 8MVA capacity power is needed and right now, the existing power cannot provide that and we cannot go ahead to test some of the things installed because of the low capacity of power. All these things need to be done,” Lee explained.
The “terminal building will be completed by the end of February 2018 but because there is no power, we can’t commission it. The equipment needed to finish the work is on site and it will be completed soon. If power and water are provided, the building will be commissioned by the end of next year,” he assured.
