RIVERS ELECTION: SUPREME COURT DISMISSES APM’S PETITION AGAINST FUBARA
The Supreme Court rejected the Allied People’s Movement’s appeal on Monday, overturning Siminalayi Fubara’s election as governor of Rivers State.
The All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Patrick Tonye-Cole, filed an appeal, and the five-member panel of the Supreme Court presided over the case with a reserved verdict. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun chaired the panel. During the hearings on Monday, the APM’s attorney and its candidate for the March 18 election, Innocent Kere, decided to withdraw the appeal. As a result, the highest court rejected the appeal.
After the court heard the arguments from all sides, the appeal of Tonye-Cole and APC was put on hold until the matter was decided.
Tonye-Cole is asking the Supreme Court to remove Fubara on the grounds that the governor did not step down from his position as the state’s accountant general in accordance with the constitution and the date set by the Electoral Act. All of Fubara’s appeals had previously been rejected by lower courts, which affirmed his election.
