KENYAN, BERNARD SANG, WINS 9TH LAGOS CITY MARATHON

Bernard Sang, a Kenyan runner, won the Gold-Label 4km 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, February 10th.

He finished in 02:16:49 to take home the $30,000 first prize.

The 32-year-old, who turns 33 in five days, did not beat his personal best of 2:10:59 set in Istanbul, Turkey, in the 2021 marathon.

Sang became the latest in a long line of champions from Kenya, who had won the 42-kilometre Gold-Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021.

Additionally, Edwin Kiptoo and Cheprot, two other Kenyans, placed second and third, winning $1,000 and $20,000, respectively.

At the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Ethiopian Kebene Chala, 25, won the women’s division and was the first woman to cross the finish line.

The first person from Nigeria to cross the finish line in the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Shehu Muazu, will receive a N1 million cash reward.

The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2024, which started at the National Stadium in Surulere and finished in Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, attracted over 81 elite runners from across the world.

The United Nations has also verified that 15 refugees will be competing in the competitive field of runners that is the Access Lagos City Marathon, according to Chief Bukola Olopade, the Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the race’s proprietors.
