BREAKING: ABDULSALAMI, JONATHAN, OTHERS ATTEND STATE POLICE DIALOGUE IN ABUJA
Among the notable individuals now assembled in Abuja for a national dialogue on state policing on Monday are retired Catholic archbishop John Onaiyekan, former president Goodluck Jonathan, and former military head of state of Nigeria, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.).
The dialogue, which is being organised by the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, marks the start of discussions on the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution Amendment Bill 2023 (Establishment of State Police), which is being supported by 13 other lawmakers and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
By decentralising the police, the measure aims to enhance public safety and fortify law enforcement in Nigeria.
The bill’s provision establishes a constitutional framework for states that wish to create and continue their law enforcement agencies, in addition to providing state police in addition to federal police.
The law “aims to clarify the scope of the powers and responsibilities of the federal and state police and to provide for their funding and oversight,” according to Kalu, the chair of the House Constitution Review Committee, in his welcome speech.
