UNN SUSPENDS LECTURER OVER SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Mfonobong Udoudom, a lecturer in the general studies department of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State, has been suspended by the school’s management after it was discovered that he had harassed a female student in a video.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the university’s spokesperson, Okwunka Omeaku, stated that sexual misconduct involving staff and students is not tolerated at the institution.
She also noted that “UNN is among the few universities in the country that has a sexual harassment policy, which guides the relationship between our male and female staff and our staff and students in particular.”
Omeaku claims that if the university’s disciplinary panel finds Udeudom guilty, they won’t think twice about disciplining him.
āThe management of the University of Nigeria has suspended Mr (not a Professor) Mfonobong David Udoudom, a lecturer in our General Studies division, who was caught in a video allegedly harassing a female student,ā the statement partly read.
āThe indefinite suspension is with immediate effect pending the outcome of a disciplinary panel constituted by the University to investigate the incident.
āFor the record, the University of Nigeria has a zero tolerance for sexual misconduct involving our staff and students. UNN is among the few universities in the country that has a Sexual Harassment Policy, which guides the relationship between our staff and students in particular and among our male and female staff.
āAs a university, we are committed to protecting our students from any form of abuse and exploitation, and the University Management will not hesitate to punish Mr Mfonobong David Udoudom , according to our rules, if he is found guilty by our disciplinary panel.ā
It was said that the instructor had made a vow to the female student that she would not pass his course unless she agreed to have sex with him.
More information was obtained, indicating that problems arose right away after the students completed the man’s course for their exam. The lecturer had threatened to fail some female students if they “failed to see him.”
The woman told her husband, who also complained to the university administration, who then urged the woman to comply.
The instructor was seen in a widely shared video in her undies, and she was later permitted to wear inner shorts.
