SIX DEAD FROM SUSPECTED MENINGITIS OUTBREAK IN BAUCHI
A suspected meningitis outbreak has claimed the lives of six Almajirai pupils from Tsangaya Islamic schools in Udobo Town, Gamawa Local Government Area, Bauchi State.
The Udobo maternity facility is now treating two additional Almajirai students from the Tsangaya schools, according to Mr. Nairu Baukura, Chairman of the Gamawa Local Government Caretaker Committee. Although Baukura was unable to ascertain the precise count of impacted individuals, he clarified that multiple others had received treatment and been released.
Within the local government region, there are three Tsangaya centres where the infection is said to have spread.
Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, has responded to the situation by assuring that the state is addressing the outbreak. He disclosed that meningitis cases have been identified in seven local government districts and that isolation and treatment protocols are being used to control the problem.
Mohammed went on to say that medications are being given to patients who have had close contact with the ill in order to stop the disease from spreading. Though he pointed out that the state has only been able to vaccinate residents of two local government districts thus far, he acknowledged the worldwide vaccine scarcity.
The health official warned that the disease is transmitted through public gatherings, underscoring the importance of preventive measures to contain the outbreak.
