CHOLERA: NAFDAC INTENSIFIES SURVEILLANCE ON FOOD VENDORS, RESTAURANTS OVER HYGIENIC PRACTICES
Agency Report
To maintain hygienic procedures against cholera outbreaks in Sokoto State, the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has increased surveillance in restaurants and other eateries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was informed on Friday by the agency’s state coordinator, Mr. Garba Adamu, that a team of officers had been assigned to make sure that all food establishments followed sanitary standards.
Adamu explained that “the team, headed by NAFDAC’s Nutrition Officer, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, is to ensure that only safe, hygienic, and quality foods are being prepared and sold to consumers.”
He noted that food vendors were required to abide by the agency’s requirements regarding proper hygiene and sanitation measures through routine inspection.
He claims that as cases of cholera are being reported in several regions of the nation, an effort is being made to protect people’s health and stop the disease from spreading.
The coordinator reiterated that NAFDAC would keep up its efforts to detain defaulters and forewarn food providers against using contaminated, counterfeit, unregistered, and expired goods when preparing their meals.
As part of the organization’s attempts to guarantee that only hygienic items are sold, Adamu said the program would be expanded to local government regions, border markets, and other locations.
He called on the public to be wary of poorly prepared foods and report any unhygienic practices from any eatery to NAFDAC, reiterating the agency’s determination to safeguard the health of the nation.
