The Federal Government has pledged to take strict action against contractors involved in building substandard school facilities in the country.

It revealed that preparations are already underway to deploy monitors to oversee all of its school construction projects nationwide, warning contractors to improve their work or face consequences.

Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of UBEC, made this known during a training session for the commission’s physical planning department staff on enhancing project quality through simple on-site assessment tools.

He urged stakeholders, including the State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), to prioritize quality in school building projects, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate subpar work.

Speaking further at the event, organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) and Tectonics Engineering Group, Abuja, Dr. Bobboyi stressed that the commission will no longer accept poorly executed projects.

He cautioned contractors against the dangers of delivering substandard school infrastructure, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to improving the quality of educational facilities to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for Nigerian children.

He also mentioned that the commission will deploy monitors to regularly inspect the progress of construction sites.

“We are dealing with very strategic sector, with children who are between the ages of five and six up to about 12 that are very vulnerable in any building collapse. We saw that when it happened in Jos.
