UPDATE: SHETTIMA VISITS MAIDUGURI, SYMPATHISES WITH FLOOD VICTIMS
Vice President Kashim Shettima has given Nigerians confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will handle the persistent flooding problem in the nation, stating that a thorough plan has already been established to attack the problem head-on.
On Tuesday, during a visit to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, the Vice President provided assurance while doing an on-the-ground assessment of the devastating floods that have forced residents in the state to flee.
Shettima referred to the catastrophe as Maiduguri’s worst flood in more than thirty years in a statement provided by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha.
He lamented that, despite the execution of extensive contingency preparations and preemptive strategies designed to alleviate potential effects in anticipation of the 2024 flood forecasts, the intensity of the flood in Maiduguri has significantly exceeded the government’s projections.
While commiserating with the victims, the Vice President said the President did not only express his “deepest sympathies but has also assured that the federal government will prioritise the welfare of the affected communities”.
The flood which began over the weekend has worsened. Authorities have blamed it on the excess water from the Alau Dam and the collapse of the spillways which has unleashed a significant surge of water downstream, causing widespread flooding in the surrounding communities.
