Augustine Eguavoen has denied rumours that he has stepped down as caretaker coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Eguavoen, who stressed that he remains in charge, said upon his return to Nigeria from the latest encounter in Rwanda, “Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still in charge.”

He continued, “I am the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation, and it is my responsibility to manage the Super Eagles at this moment. That is where we stand.”

Addressing the situation further, Eguavoen explained, “I only mentioned that I would sit down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games to discuss our approach for the next matches.”

He expressed disappointment over the dissemination of inaccurate information, stating, “It’s quite unfortunate that people are spreading incorrect stories. In our current situation, we don’t need negative reports.”

Under Eguavoen’s guidance, the Super Eagles secured a 3-0 victory against Benin and were held to a goalless draw by Rwanda in Kigali on Tuesday.

The team currently leads Group D of the 2025 AFCON qualification series with four points from two matches.
