GUARD YOUR PUBLIC UTTERANCES – MURIC TELLS FORMER HEAD OF STATE, ABDULSALAMI
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has countered former military head of state General AbdulSalami Abubakar’s remarks, which he made on September 17, 2024, stating that the hardship in Nigeria is “getting out of control.”
In a statement issued on September 18, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Founder and Executive Director of the organization, expressed concern over Abubakar’s use of “extreme language” to describe the current economic situation.
MURIC criticized the former general for his choice of words, stating, “We do not expect a former head of state to use such strong words.”
Akintola emphasized that such statements could incite unrest among the populace and suggested that Abubakar, trained in diplomatic language, should have chosen a more measured approach.
While acknowledging the hardships faced by Nigerians, the organization urged Abubakar to communicate his concerns more appropriately.
The former head of state had also encouraged peaceful demonstrations while advising against violence. However, Akintola expressed disappointment, referencing the recent #EndBadGovernance protests and their violent outcomes, questioning the feasibility of peaceful protests in the current climate.
MURIC advised Abubakar to direct his recommendations to the government, given his access to the seat of power, and called on those planning to demonstrate on October 1 to reconsider. The organization underscored the need for dialogue over protest, warning that demonstrations in today’s Nigeria often lead to chaos and unrest.
