The Nigerian Army held a press briefing today to address allegations made by former Private Ruth Ogunleye against Colonel IB Abdulkareem and other personnel from the Nigerian Army Medical Corps. Ogunleye has launched a series of accusations, including claims of sexual harassment, against Abdulkareem, primarily through social media platforms like TikTok. The Army expressed concern over Ogunleye’s sustained online campaign, describing it as defamatory and misleading.

During the briefing, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Army reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights. It was emphasized that every allegation against personnel is thoroughly investigated. The spokesperson revealed that the Army had taken Ogunleye’s accusations seriously, and the matter was referred to the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police for a full investigation. After a detailed inquiry, the Army concluded that Colonel Abdulkareem did not commit the acts of sexual harassment as alleged. The investigation was reportedly impartial, and the findings cleared Abdulkareem of any wrongdoing.

The Army also addressed Ogunleye’s health status, noting that she had been recommended for discharge on medical grounds as early as 2022. The Army had opted to provide her with medical care before finalizing her discharge. During this period, concerns were raised about her mental health, leading to a medical evaluation at the National Hospital in Abuja. Following the evaluation, which confirmed Ogunleye’s medical vulnerability, the Army decided to forgo disciplinary action in favor of ensuring her well-being. She was discharged from service and granted a 50% disability pension for life, alongside other benefits, including her Terminal Leave Allowance and contributions to the Nigerian Army Welfare Insurance Scheme (NAWIS).

Despite these actions, the Army claimed Ogunleye has continued to use online platforms to promote false narratives, targeting Abdulkareem and other senior officers. The Army condemned this behavior as cyberbullying and warned that it would not tolerate the defamation of its personnel. They urged the public to treat her allegations as baseless, given the results of the investigation and her medical condition.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its professionalism and its commitment to ensuring the welfare of its personnel while cautioning against further defamatory actions. Colonel Abdulkareem, they stated, is a dedicated officer who has served the nation honorably.
