NEWS: 37 CHILDREN, NINE OTHERS DROWN DURING HINDU FESTIVAL IN INDIA
Agency Report
At least 46 people, including 37 children, perished while attending a Hindu festival in eastern India, a local government official told AFP on Thursday.
An official from the Bihar Disaster Management Department (DMD) told AFP that 46 people drowned in different events in Bihar state while ritually washing in rivers and ponds inundated by recent rainfall.
“People ignored dangerous water levels in rivers and ponds while bathing to celebrate this festival,” said the official, who asked for anonymity because he was not permitted to speak with the media.
The drownings occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday in 15 districts of Bihar state as devotees celebrated the Jitiya Parv Hindu festival, which is observed by mothers for the safety of their children.
Authorities were attempting to recover three more bodies, according to the official.
