LEADER YAHYA SINWAR’S DEMISE CONFIRMED BY HAMAS
One day after Israel declared the leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas dead, Hamas confirmed on Friday that Yahya Sinwar had been slain in Gaza by the Israeli military.
“We lament the great leader, the martyred brother, Yahya Sinwar, Abu Ibrahim,” Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya, who is based in Qatar, stated in a video statement that was recorded and aired by Al Jazeera.
After the deadliest attack in Israel’s history on October 7, 2023, Sinwar rose to the top of the country’s most wanted list.
In his remarks, Hayya said that until the conflict in Gaza was resolved, Hamas would not free the hostages it had taken from Israel during the assault.
The top Hamas official urged Israel to evacuate Gaza and free Palestinian detainees held in Israeli jails, saying the hostages “will not return… unless the aggression against our people in Gaza stops.”
Hayya added that Sinwar would now be considered one of “the leaders and symbols of the movement who preceded him” and that his death would only fortify the group’s resolve.
