TWO CONFIRMED DEAD AS POLICE, SOLDIER CLASH IN NASARAWA
Following a confrontation between an army officer and a police special constabulary assigned to Jenkwe Division, Obi Local Government Region, at Agyaragu Market on Sunday, two people were officially declared dead in the Obi local government region.
The event that resulted in the deaths happened after an inquiry into a suspected motorbike theft case, according to a statement released by DSP Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Relations Officer, on Sunday at around 12:30 PM.
The statement claims that a police officer working with a Police Special Constabulary attached to Jenkwe Division, Obi Local Government Area, at Agyaragu Market, arrested a suspect following the reporting of the theft case.
However, a soldier (name withheld) who was allegedly deployed in Borno State but returned home on leave attacked the police officers as they were transporting the suspect to the police station in an attempt to stop them from making the arrest.
The soldier allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the Police Special Constabulary as a result, according to the statement.
“In self-defence, the soldier was overpowered, and his knife was used against him. They both sustained varying degrees of injuries, and the wounded soldier was subsequently confirmed dead,” the statement said in part.
According to reports, several young people organised and assaulted the police station, lighting it on fire in the process.
Three of the attackers were reportedly killed when police arrived at the scene of the incident, and one of them was later pronounced dead.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada immediately visited the scene alongside Military personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, 177 Guards Battalion and 22 Quick Response Unit where he swiftly ordered the deployment of a unit of Police Mobile Force, a cell of Counter Terrorist Unit and Tactical units to restore peace in the area,” the statement added.
The statement added that normalcy has been restored, and an investigation is ongoing as the commissioner orders manhunt for perpetrators.
