LEKKI-AJAH BUSES TO BE TRANSFORMED AS LAGOS ADVANCES BUS REFORM
The Lagos State Government has announced its readiness to integrate mini and midi buses (Korope and Danfo) operating along the Lekki-Ajah route into the state’s Bus Reform Initiative.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, shared this update in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
The statement, signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, mentioned that the project is currently in the planning stage.
Giwa noted that the documentation process for bus operators interested in the initiative is underway, with 10 operators having submitted letters of intent to the Ministry of Transportation, and six of them already confirmed.
“All participating buses will undergo physical verification by the Vehicle Inspection Service and Motor Vehicle Administration Agency to ensure their roadworthiness and proper documentation.
“Once verified, the buses will be branded in the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority colours and equipped with validators,” he said.
Giwa mentioned that a framework is being created to incorporate union dues deductions into an e-ticketing system, while also tackling the activities of hoodlums extorting money from transporters.
He stated that the initiative would undergo a three-month test run before its full implementation.
He further explained that the complete implementation of the reform would lead to the removal of mini buses from the Lekki-Ajah Expressway.
According to Giwa, the buses would instead be deployed to inner routes and local communities.
