SHUT DOWN OF LAGOS STATE BROADCASTING SERVICES BY LABOUR UNIONS

Labour unions, including the NLC, RATTAWU, and NUJ, forcefully shut down Lagos Television, Radio Lagos/Eko FM, and Lagos Traffic Radio earlier today. In a violent display, they broke down doors and turned off transmitters, claiming their actions were part of an ongoing strike.

The unions are demanding that approximately 245 workers be added to the government’s payroll, despite ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the issue.

On January 8, 2025, a meeting was convened between government representatives, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, and the union leadership. The meeting followed submissions made by the management of the affected broadcast organisations to the Ministry of Establishments and Training.

Despite these efforts, the unions disrupted broadcasts by shutting down transmitters and forcibly removing essential staff from the premises. Such actions violate the rights of these workers to perform their duties.

The leadership of NUJ and RATTAWU is urged to avoid intimidating workers and turning strikes into attacks on agencies and their employees. Strikes should be conducted responsibly and lawfully.

Employees of the three broadcast stations are encouraged to report to work and avoid confrontations with union members.
