KOGI GOVERNOR REMOVES TAX CLEARANCE REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENT REGISTRATION
Usman Ododo, the governor of Kogi State, has ordered that the Tax Clearance Certificate be removed immediately as a requirement for students to register in state-owned postsecondary educational institutions.
During a media briefing in Lokoja on Wednesday, Salihu Enehe, the Executive Chairman of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, revealed this.
According to Enehe, the governor’s order intends to promote educational endeavors in the state while lessening the load on parents and guardians.
“Parents and guardians are no longer required to present a TCC for registering their children and wards in Kogi’s tertiary institutions,” Enehe stated.
However, he emphasised the importance of tax compliance, warning that tax evasion remains a punishable offence.
“While we have removed this requirement to support education, every taxable citizen must fulfil their civic responsibility by paying taxes to contribute to the state’s development. Tax evasion may attract penalties, including fines or imprisonment of up to six months,” he added.
After parents were denied admission to state-owned institutions last week for not presenting the certificate when their children registered, the TCC requirement provoked intense criticism.
