KADUNA GOV REINSTATES CHIEF DETHRONED BY EL-RUFAI

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has reinstated the dethroned Paramount Chief of Piriga Chiefdom in the Lere Local Government Area,  Jonathan  Zamuna, in compliance with court orders.

Zamuna was deposed on May 22, 2023, by the immediate past governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

The former governor took the decision a few days to the end of his tenure.

Displeased, the chief approached the National Industrial Court in Kaduna, which, in its June 14, 2024 judgment, nullified the dethronement.

Justice Bashar Alkali declared the removal and deposition of Zamuna as “irregular, unfair, null and unconditional and contrary to good conscience.”

The court granted an order restoring Zamuna as the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom – with all his salaries, allowances, entitlements and benefits of the office – within 30 days.

Speaking during a meeting with some traditional rulers in July last year, Governor Sani had promised to comply with the court judgment and reinstate Zamuna.

The governor said, “I want to remind you with every sense of humility, that I am a democrat and a respecter of the rule of law. I also know too well how traditional values have shaped our state for the better.

“Furthermore, as proof of my commitment to the rule of law, I want to make known to you our intention to comply fully with the judgment of the court, issued on 10th June 2024, restoring the Chief of Piriga, in Lere LGA, His Royal Highness, Jonathan Zamuna to his stool.”

In fulfilment of his promise, Sani, on Wednesday, reinstated Zamuna at a ceremony held in the Council Chambers of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.

The governor congratulated Zamuna and advised him to treat all people in his chiefdom equally, without ethno-religious discrimination.

“We are committed to upholding the principles of justice and fairness in all our actions,” Sani said while reflecting on the significance of the reinstatement.

“I am sure you have had time to reflect on the past. Lessons from the past help in strengthening us and making us better leaders. You now have a unique opportunity to serve your people with dedication, courage and compassion.

“This is a solemn moment for us as a government and as a people. It is an opportunity for us to reflect on our past actions and how they have impacted our state. Have our actions fostered peace and understanding, or have they deepened divisions in our state?

“Our administration stands for the rule of law, due process and justice. That is why we did not waste time in complying with the judgment of the Kaduna State Industrial Court on the reinstatement of the Chief of Piriga Chiefdom.”

In his response, an elated Chief Zamuna thanked Governor Sani for his reinstatement and described him as a blessing to Kaduna State.

“Your leadership has brought peace and stability to our state. You have demonstrated your commitment to justice and fairness, and we are grateful for that,” the chief said.
