IMPEACHMENT: NOTHING HAS CHANGED – LAGOS ASSEMBLY MEMBERS
Lagos Assembly United Behind Meranda
It is important to emphasize that over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are firmly in support of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. We stand by the decision made on January 13th, when Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was impeached, and we are fully prepared to defend this position. As representatives of the people of Lagos, we are committed to ensuring good governance and maintaining a harmonious relationship with other arms of government.
The House’s position remains unchanged. The stance being advanced by the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Obasa, is unnecessary and contrary to parliamentary decorum.
While Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was elected as Speaker for the 10th Assembly, the majority decision at the aforementioned plenary was to remove him. We firmly support the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Meranda, and nothing about this decision has changed.
As elected representatives from various constituencies across the state, all members have the unquestionable right, under statutory orders, to remove principal officers, including the Speaker.
I urge the former Speaker to embrace peace and harmony, as many others have done. His current confrontational stance risks creating unnecessary tension and will not be in the best interest of the state. Any effort to destabilize the polity will be firmly resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Meranda.
Lagos desires peace, and peace is what we will achieve.
