SOWORE ARRIVES FORCE HEADQUARTERS FOR QUESTIONING OVER VIRAL ALLEGED EXTORTION VIDEO
Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the Force Intelligence Department Headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning for questioning by the police. He arrived at 9:58 a.m. in response to an invitation following a viral video he posted, in which he accused officers at a Lagos checkpoint of extortion. The police have listed several allegations against Sowore, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobeying lawful orders, cyberstalking, and allegedly attempting to prevent arrests.
The invitation letter, issued by the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force, outlined these charges and requested Sowore’s presence at their Abuja office for an interview with the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
In reaction to the summons, the Take It Back Movement, a group backing Sowore, organized a protest dubbed “Occupy Force Headquarters” to highlight issues of police extortion. A flyer featuring images of Sowore and the Inspector General of Police quickly spread across the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
By Monday morning, security forces, including heavily armed officers and anti-riot units, had barricaded roads leading to the Force Headquarters in anticipation of the protest.
