POLICE PROMISE TO RAID HOSTELS ACCOMMODATING CRIMINALS IN A’IBOM
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, has cautioned hoteliers and hospitality businesses in the state against providing shelter to criminals, warning that any establishment found guilty will be raided and shut down.
This warning was issued in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on Monday, after a meeting with stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism sector in Uyo.
The police command organized the meeting, which included key industry players such as the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria, Nigeria Hotels Association, Restaurants and Bars Association of Nigeria, Hotel Owners Association, Association of Professional Chefs of Nigeria, Hospitality Consultants and Managers Association of Nigeria, and the Airport Taxi Association of Nigeria.
During the meeting, Azare stressed the growing need for cooperation between law enforcement and the hospitality sector to fight crime.
He revealed that intelligence reports had identified hotels and hostels as potential hideouts for criminals operating within the state.
“It is your responsibility to ensure that your premises are not used as safe havens for criminals. Any hotel found harbouring or shielding such individuals will leave us with no choice but to raid the premises and shut it down for investigations,” Azare said.
He urged hotel owners and managers to be vigilant, monitor the activities of their guests, and maintain accurate records of individuals checking into their facilities.
The commissioner also emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious activities early, urging stakeholders to notify the nearest police station as soon as they notice anything unusual, rather than waiting for crimes to occur.
He reassured the stakeholders that the police were not trying to disrupt their businesses but were focused on maintaining peace and security in the state.
“Security is a collective responsibility. We must work together to maintain the reputation of Akwa Ibom as one of the most peaceful states in the country,” Azare added.
In response, the President of the Hotel Owners Association in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Daniel Udoh, thanked the police command for its proactive approach to ensuring security.
Udoh promised that hotel owners would take swift action to enhance security at their establishments, including maintaining accurate guest records, closely monitoring activities, and promptly reporting any suspicious individuals or incidents to the police.
