Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has rewarded the three best graduating students of Ogun State Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences, Ilese-Ijebu, with N2.5 million each in recognition of their academic excellence at the institution’s 3rd combined convocation ceremony held on Thursday.
The awardees are Famuyewa Aminat from the Dental Technology department, who emerged top with a CGPA of 3.75 for the 2021/2022 academic year; Rasak Temilola from Health Information Management, with a CGPA of 3.68 as the best for the 2022/2023 session; and Kanyinsola Salami from Environmental Health Technology, with a CGPA of 3.94 as the overall best for the 2023/2024 session. Salami was also recognized as the overall best-graduating student of the combined convocation.
Abiodun, represented by his Special Adviser on Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, announced the reward, stating that it was part of the government’s commitment to promoting educational excellence.
“This gesture reflects our administration’s dedication to fostering a culture of academic excellence and creating opportunities for intellectual growth,” Abiodun said. “Education remains the bedrock of any progressive society, and we will continue to provide the necessary resources to ensure our students thrive.”
He commended the management of the polytechnic for its commitment to maintaining high academic standards despite being a relatively young institution. He also urged the graduating students to use their knowledge to revolutionize the health sector.
“We expect you to go out and make meaningful contributions to society, particularly in the health sector,” he said. “Your success is not just a personal achievement but a responsibility to improve the well-being of our people.”
Speaking at the event, the Rector, Dr. Rasaki Akinbo, praised the institution’s rapid development since its upgrade to a polytechnic in 2023.
“As Nigeria’s first Polytechnic of Health, we are committed to leading in health and allied sciences education,” Akinbo said. “We have successfully accredited 11 new programmes, re-accredited five existing ones, and completed key projects, including the Medical Laboratory Technician and Health Information Management buildings, hostel renovations, and ICT center upgrades.”
He expressed gratitude to the governor for his support and noted that the institution’s Master Plan, which outlines its long-term development strategy, is now being implemented.
Chairman of the Governing Council, Kunle Kakejaiye, appealed for further government intervention, particularly in infrastructure development.
“We need urgent state support to tar the internal roads within the institution and further fund critical projects,” he said. “The polytechnic has made remarkable progress, but additional investment will ensure it reaches its full potential.”
The event highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to support education and recognize academic excellence, reaffirming its commitment to producing skilled graduates who will contribute to national development.
