DIASPORA: FG CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST UNPROFESSIONAL RECRUIERS, IRREGULAR MIGRATION
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), emphasized the need to protect Nigerians, particularly the youth, from exploitation, ensuring that migration is a choice rather than a necessity.
Speaking through Mr. Oladele Ogunkanbi, a staff member of the Commission, Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged the relevance of the event’s theme in light of the growing “Japa” phenomenon in the country, which sees many Nigerians seeking to migrate abroad. She stressed that the issue had become a national concern, requiring cooperation between both the public and private sectors to tackle the root causes of irregular migration and dismantle networks of illegal recruiters.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the Association of Recruiter License Placement Agencies of Nigeria (ARLPAN) for its efforts in addressing irregular migration and reiterated NiDCOM’s commitment to collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure safe and legal migration pathways for Nigerians.
ARLPAN President, Mr. Rex Bamidele Jacob, explained that the event aimed to tackle the root causes of irregular migration, including economic hardship, misinformation, human rights violations, and the false promises made by unauthorized recruiters. He warned that these unethical practices have led to tragic consequences for vulnerable Nigerians, who may fall victim to trafficking, criminal activities, or imprisonment due to fraudulent immigration documents.
Jacob urged stakeholders to unite in efforts to end the operations of unlicensed recruiters, who, he claimed, are largely responsible for the increase in irregular migration cases. He also highlighted the crucial role of the media in raising awareness about the issue, given its impact on both migrants and the country as a whole.
The call was made during a press briefing by ARLPAN in Lagos, themed “Effect and Implications of Consistent Irregular Migration.” Jacob proposed several solutions, including stronger enforcement of legal migration agencies, enhanced international cooperation, better border management, strategic public sensitization programs, and a balanced approach to security and humanitarian considerations to address both short and long-term challenges posed by irregular migration and illegal recruitment activities.
