JUST IN: POLICE CONFIRM SIX LIVES LOST IN OSUN POLITICAL CRISIS
The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that six individuals died during the political unrest that occurred in the state on Monday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, extended condolences to those who lost loved ones and suffered property damage.
Opalola also stated that Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, has assured the public that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out to identify the culprits and ensure they are held accountable under the law.
“The events of yesterday left six people dead and many others hospitalised.
“We are deeply saddened by what happened, and various groups have been called for meetings. The Commissioner of Police has held a series of discussions to ensure such incidents do not recur.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected, including those who lost their lives and property. The CP assures the public of a thorough investigation and promises that the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law,” Opalola said.
Opalola begged citizens to maintain their composure, let security personnel do their jobs, and bring about peace.
She added, “Those fomenting trouble should desist from such acts. This state is known for peace.
“We will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace of our state. The IGP has deployed mobile policemen from outside the state to Osun, and they arrived last night.
“The command will leave no stone unturned in ensuring peace is restored. Let us give peace a chance.”
After authorities elected under the APC in the local government elections held on October 15, 2022, attempted to execute a court ruling, which sparked opposition from PDP members, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party have been squabbling over the situation throughout the state.
Remi Abbas, one of the people killed in the incident, was elected in the January 2018 local government elections and had previously been the chairman of the Irewole Local Government Area.
