How US trip blew our minds – Hassan Giggs

In February, Kannywood director, Hassan Giggs, alongside six other actors, travelled to the United States for a three-week training workshop on film making.
The workshop was organized by Relativity School, a film training institute in California, United States.
Mr. Giggs, Ali Nuhu, Bello Mohammed Bello, Hauwa Maina, Hadiza Gabon, Kamal Alkali and Nazifi Asnanic made the trip.
Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES’ Mohammed Lere, Mr. Giggs said there was no better time for the training opportunity than when it came.
PT: How did you get chosen to be part of the trip?
Giggs: The gist about going to the US came up last year, precisely in March when I was told that I would be taking part in a training workshop in America sometime this year. Even though it was a sponsored trip I was happy about it and I kept my fingers crossed.
PT: Who sponsored you and your crew?
Giggs: African Technology Foundation US, Unity Bank Nigeria, Wakanow Nigeria and the host school, Relativity School California.
PT: What did you learn, different from what you were doing in Kannywood?
Giggs: After the training, I felt like I wasn’t the Hassan Giggs that I am and all of us felt the same way. We were taught how to make films in a more advanced way.
The instructors changed our thinking towards film production and how to get the best in film making. The concept of directing a great film, acting and producing one. We were taught how to get the best in film production just like it was done in Hollywood.
It was a good three weeks, intensive classes and believe me honestly it changed our mindset in film production.
PT: What else did you learn, apart from directing?
Giggs: Of course it was joint classes and all of us stayed together, worked together and practiced together.
We were introduced to some sophisticated equipment like production cameras, how to create a virtual location, costumes approach and they introduced us to some production software in the case of post-production.
PT: Now that you are back, what are we likely to see coming from the stable of Hassan Giggs?
Giggs: Yes, I will blow the Kannywood industry very soon. I wouldn’t want you to get carried away by what I am saying now but believe me I am working on something big and it will be one that has never happened in Kannywood. Part of the film was shot in the US during the workshop.
PT: You are known for producing good movies especially those with special effects. What are your motivations?
Giggs: I like challenges and the only way I can get that challenge is by going the extra mile to do something that is not the usual room and parlour family drama so I try to go the extra mile.
PT: Hindu won awards in 2015, your movie, Macijiya, is also a great one imitating the Indian snake film ‘Nagin’, and Bayajidda. What would you do differently if you are ask to direct those films again now?
Giggs: I will definite do better than what I have done. Approach and technology will be better employed in it now.
I am working on a film now ‘Sarauniya’ and I tell you just wait and see what I am going to do in it courtesy of this training workshop.
PT: How did you get the name Giggs?
Giggs: My love for Manchester United and the player Ryan Giggs was my favourite player, so people who knew that call me Giggs anytime I am on the pitch playing football, my second hubby.
PT: You are one among Kannywood personalities married to an actress, how did you feel about that?
Giggs: Wow, great question indeed. Marrying Muhibbat Abdussalam, my wife is a dream come true for me. She was an actress even though she is now deep in production and directing. Let me confess she was my missing rib. We are one perfect match. She understand what I want, she criticizes me and encourages me to do more in my career. And one other thing, Muhibbat is a great cook. If she gives you food, you forget yourself.
PT: What else do you want us to know about your American trip?
Giggs: It will speak for itself when you see my next films.
