SHEHU SANI DEFENDS N15.6 TRILLION LAGOS-CALABAR COASTAL HIGHWAY PROJECT AGAINST OBASANJO’S CRITICISM
Former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has come to the defense of the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, asserting that it is not a wasteful venture.
This comes after former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized the project, calling it wasteful and corrupt in his new book Nigeria: Past and Future. Obasanjo also condemned the President Bola Tinubu administration for allocating N21 billion for the construction of a new official residence for Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
In his book, unveiled last week to mark Obasanjo’s 88th birthday, the former president argued that state resources were being misappropriated, pointing to the coastal highway and the Vice-President’s residence as prime examples of waste and misplaced priorities.
Sani, responding to these remarks on his official X handle, disagreed with Obasanjo’s view, arguing that the massive funds allocated for the highway could have easily been misappropriated by a single individual, citing past incidents like the Central Bank of Nigeria scandal. He stated, “I don’t think Lagos-Calabar highway is wasteful, taking cognizance that such amount of money for the project can be stolen by one man, as it happened in the CBN in the past.”
