TANKER DRIVERS BLOCK HIGHWAY TO PROTEST ALLEGED KILLING OF COLLEAGUE IN PLATEAU
Truck and tanker drivers blocked the Maraban Jama’a section of the Jos-Abuja Road in Plateau State on Saturday morning to protest the alleged killing of a colleague by police officers.
The demonstration led to severe traffic congestion as the drivers used their vehicles to obstruct both lanes, demanding justice.
According to protester Haruna Ahmed, the incident occurred after the victim had paid the usual N500 fee reportedly collected by police at the checkpoint. Despite complying, an officer allegedly struck him on the head with a plank, resulting in his immediate death.
“This is injustice,” Ahmed said. “The incident happened at the last checkpoint in Maraban Jama’a. After collecting the money, an officer asked us to remove the barricade and continue our journey. But as soon as the deceased moved to clear the road, another officer appeared and hit him with a bamboo stick on the head. What crime did he commit to deserve this?”
Protesting truck drivers accused security personnel in the area of frequent extortion and harassment. They urged Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to intervene, ensure justice for their slain colleague, and prevent future incidents of such brutality.
As of the time of this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement on the matter.
