STUDENT DEATHS INSPIRE CALL FOR CLOSURE OF KEBBI UNIVERSITY
Five students at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero, have reportedly died of an unidentified sickness.
A request to close the school has been made in response to the student deaths.
According to students who talked to our correspondent under condition of anonymity, the deaths started last week, with four students dying for unknown reasons.
“Today, another student reportedly fell ill overnight and died in the morning,”, a source revealed on Sunday.
Last week, World Health Organization representatives came to the campus to raise awareness about meningitis.
They did not, however, verify if the illness was a contributing factor in the first two deaths.
According to the university’s records, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, the registrar, confirmed the deaths of four pupils when contacted.
“Yes, four students have died according to our records, but the cause remains unknown.
“However, we recognise the urgent need to decongest student accommodations,” he stated.
Tilli further disclosed that he had formally written to the Ministry of Higher Education, particularly Commissioner Alhaji Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking guidance on measures to curb further fatalities.
“In our letter, we requested permission to temporarily close the university, but we have yet to receive a response. As for the nature of the disease, we are still uncertain,” he added.
According to a student representative, the management of the university received a letter from the Students’ Union Government requesting that the school be closed because of the inexplicable disease
