SEVERAL INJURED, HOUSES BURNT AS VIOLENCE BREAKS OUT IN PLATEAU COMMUNITY

Violence broke out on Monday in the Shimankar hamlet, Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State, resulting in numerous reported injuries and burned buildings.

Following the catastrophe, which lasted for several hours and sent shockwaves through the town, residents are finding it difficult to cope with the wreckage.

According to one account, a dispute over customary practices and ritual performance in the community might have been the catalyst for the violence, which started as a fight between two groups.

Tobias Kwanmen, a former Plateau South senatorial contender, confirmed the news in Jos on Monday.

Businesses and residences were reportedly set on fire as the situation swiftly worsened, he claimed.

Kwanmen claims that the problem began as a minor argument between some Muslim groups in the community and some traditional worshippers. He claims that he was informed that the traditionalists went to carry out their customary ritual in a community location, but some Muslims opposed them, preventing them from doing so, which resulted in conflict and violence.

He said, “the extent of the damage is still being assessed; security agents were quickly deployed to the scene, with other stakeholders, including councillors working to restore normalcy in the community.”

He urged all sides to seek a peaceful conclusion and to endeavor to preserve peace and stability in their society, denouncing the violence and advocating composure.

DSP Alabo Alfred, the state police command spokesperson, had not yet commented on the development.

But calm for peace, the State Government has acknowledged the conflicts.

Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, signed a press release that said this.

The violation of the peace, which the state government stated regrettably led to needless tension in the community, was met with much concern and disapproval.
