
NIGERIAN LAWMAKERS TAKE STEPS TO ESTABLISH OFFICE OF PRIME MINISTER
A bill to establish the Office of the Prime Minister as the head of government and the Office of the President as the head of state, along with a framework for the election process to these positions, has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill was one of 32 constitutional amendment bills that successfully passed second reading in the House on Thursday.
Among the bills is also a proposal to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to reserve specific seats for women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.
Another bill proposes an amendment to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to shorten the period for resolving pre-election petition matters, establish pre-election tribunals for such cases, and regulate the process for suspending a National Assembly member from legislative duties.
A separate bill to amend the Constitution also aims to revise the qualifications for individuals seeking election as President, Vice-President, governors, and deputy governors, and it passed second reading.
Additionally, a bill seeks to amend the Constitution to reevaluate the status of the Federal Capital Territory regarding the election of the President of Nigeria. Bills for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State also passed second reading.
In total, about 113 constitutional amendment bills have now passed second reading.
