OLMO, VICTOR APPROVED TO COMPLETE SEASON WITH BARCELONA
On Thursday, Spain’s sports commission announced that Dani Olmo and Pau Victor will be permitted to continue playing for Barcelona until the conclusion of the season following a dispute between the team and La Liga.
Olmo and Victor were awarded temporary licenses after signing last summer, but the Spanish league claimed that Barca had not registered them by the deadline at the end of December.
The players were first signed on a temporary basis at the beginning of the season because Barca exploited a financial gap after defender Andreas Christensen was injured.
Midfielder Olmo, who joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig last summer, and teenage forward Victor were permitted to play after the CSD declared the registration cancellations to be “null and void.”
After the CSD’s announcement, La Liga said they would appeal the decision as it was “not in accordance with the law”.
La Liga’s stringent financial fair-play requirements for the new licenses were circumvented by the financially troubled Catalan giants by selling seats in VIP boxes at their still-under-construction Camp Nou stadium to Middle Eastern investors.
Barcelona has been struggling financially for a number of years. In 2022, they sold off a number of club assets and future broadcast rights revenue to make room for the signing of players like Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
If La Liga maintains its current perception of Barcelona’s financial status, it will be challenging for them to make purchases during the forthcoming summer transfer window without making any previous sales.
