The Yoruba Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (Ẹgbẹ Akomọlẹdẹ àti Àṣà Yorùbá), Lagos State Chapter, hosted a vibrant event to honor the outgoing Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary (TG/PS) of Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye. The ceremony was held at the Immaculate Heart Comprehensive High School Hall in Maryland and attracted dignitaries, cultural performers, educators, and students who gathered to celebrate Mrs. Adekanye’s exceptional service.

The event was graced by the Lagos State Chairman of the Yoruba Teachers’ Association, Prince Aderemi Adeyemi, alongside members of the Elders-in-Council, led by Asiwaju Olasunkanmi Tella, who delivered moving tributes to the honoree.

Elder Olasunkanmi Tella shared that he had never encountered anyone as richly blessed as Mrs. Adekanye, praising her as a humble and exemplary leader who continues to serve as a true ambassador of Yoruba culture and tradition.

“Mrs. Adekanye is not only an administrator but a beacon of Yoruba culture and values in the education sector. Her passion for excellence is unmatched,” said Elder Olasunkanmi Tella.

Mrs. Funke Sorinola, a retired principal and former Lagos State Chairman of the Association (2004), noted that the virtues of Mrs. Adekanye are numerous and far-reaching, having greatly impacted many lives.

“Those who are ignorant of greatness will call it ordinary. When we see destined greatness, let us acknowledge it, name it, and let the world know that we saw something extraordinary. Anike Adekanye is an extraordinary person—very kind, respectful, honest, and a lover of all, irrespective of tribe, race, religion, or profession,” she said.

Mrs. Adebola Lawal, another Association member, commended Mrs. Adekanye for leaving a lasting impression on the state and the Association. She went on to say that Mrs. Adekanye has always led with service and humility, whether she was serving as TG/PS or as the Chairperson of Mainland Local Government.

In a lecture titled “Positive Role Modeling,” Mrs. Afolashade Abolarinwa, a retired principal, highlighted the exemplary traits of Mrs. Adekanye, which she said have earned her widespread recognition and awards, including being named the Best Outstanding TG/PS in the state.

In his closing remarks, Prince Aderemi Adeyemi described Mrs. Adekanye as a great influencer who opened doors for the development of the Association.

“She has served with dignity, purpose, and grace. Her legacy will continue to guide and promote the Yoruba language and heritage in our schools,” he added.

Vibrant cultural presentations by students from different school districts brought life to the event. The crowd gave Amina Quadri, a JSS2 student from Badagry, a standing ovation for her mesmerizing ewi (poetic chant). A dance drama detailing Mrs. Adekanye’s life and accomplishments was well welcomed, and the sekere ensemble delighted guests with traditional rhythms.

The audience also laughed and applauded when the celebrant’s trademark facial expressions and leadership style were mimicked in a hilarious way.

Mrs. Adekanye responded emotionally, thanking the Association for the tremendous honor:

“It is humbling to be celebrated by those with whom I have shared this beautiful journey. I will continue to champion the Yoruba language, our values, and our youth,” she said.

The ceremony came to a memorable close with the cutting of the celebration cake and the symbolic gift-giving, honoring a pioneer in cultural activism and education.
