FLASH FLOODS: LAGOS AGENCIES VISIT LAGOS ISLAND

Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

Given the high priority it places on the safety of its people, officials from the Lagos State Government, including representatives from the Office of Infrastructure, Office of Drainage Services, and the Water Resources Department, visited Lagos Island today to assess the ongoing road and drainage projects and to evaluate the impact of the flash flooding affecting the area.

During the visit, the officials assured residents and stakeholders that the rehabilitation of 15 key roads—Idumagbo, Moshalasi, Iga Iduganran, Okoya, Oroyinyin, Adeniji Adele Extension, Ojo-Giwa Isale Agbede, Binuyo, Collins, Princess/Isale Gangan, and Aroloya—along with the secondary and tertiary drainage systems, will continue without interruption. They emphasized that contractors are strictly adhering to the established timelines for the completion of these projects.

Addressing the flash floods, Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who led the inspection alongside the management teams from the Office of Drainage Services, Water Resources, and the Office of Infrastructure, stated that the situation is being actively addressed. He explained that pumps have been installed at the downstream to help reduce the water levels.

He urged residents and commuters to remain patient as the government works to resolve the issue.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Ayodele Somide said, “In the interim, we have directed the contractors to put in place necessary measures to mitigate the flash flood, and put in place effective logistics while the construction lasts,” Daramola said.

According to Daramola, based on the survey carried out, we have directed the contractors to commence work immediately on Adeniji Adele Extension while working simultaneously on Oroyinyin,” he said.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure said that the construction of the roads will be completed in a record time since the contractors, as part of efforts to ensure timely reconstruction of the roads, will commence work.

According to the Special Adviser, “the Administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a responsive one and would leave no stone unturned at reconstructing these roads as quickly as possible.”

Recall that the Lagos State Government on Friday 28th February held a stakeholders meeting to herald the flag off of construction works on the multiple road, drainage and urban regeneration projects.
