OSHIOMOLE CHALLENGES ABATI TO STREET FIGHT OVER DISRESPECTFUL REMARKS
By Jen Nomamiukor
Abati seemed to mock former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s defection to the APC, implying that Okowa may have needed permission from Adams Oshiomhole (the APC’s former national chairman) before being forgiven for switching parties. This remark appears to criticize Okowa’s change of allegiance in a sarcastic tone.
Adams Oshiomhole, a Nigerian senator and former labor leader, has challenged media personality Reuben Abati to a “street fight” following remarks Oshiomhole perceived as disrespectful. The confrontation stems from a public exchange in which Abati allegedly made derogatory comments about Oshiomhole. In response, Oshiomhole issued a strong rebuttal, questioning Abati’s credibility and daring him to settle the matter physically. The incident has sparked debate over civility in public discourse and the boundaries of political criticism in Nigeria.

Oshiomhole expressed surprise and disapproval that a senior editor would sarcastically ask former Delta State Governor Okowa whether he had sought Oshiomhole’s permission for his “sins to be forgiven” before defecting to the APC.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole criticized broadcaster Reuben Abati without directly naming him, accusing him of harboring personal grudges and lacking objectivity. Oshiomhole dismissed Abati’s remarks questioning his role in legal prosecutions, defended his legacy in the labour movement, and referenced Abati’s past arrest by the EFCC. He also accused Abati of being bitter over political losses and challenged him to confront issues directly instead of criticizing through media platforms.
In the 2019 Ogun governorship election, Abati ran as deputy governor alongside Buruji Kashamu under the PDP but lost to APC candidate Dapo Abiodun.
