In 2027, the PDP Organising Secretary stated that defections from the party are mainly motivated by personal gain rather than ideological reasons or party loyalty

Alhaji Umar Bature, the PDP National Organizing Secretary, stated that defections from the PDP to the APC are driven mainly by personal interests rather than party ideology or principles.

Bature, speaking to the media in Abuja on Monday, denied that internal party issues caused recent defections, stating they were motivated by personal ambitions.

Bature responded to reports that the APC is enticing opposition members with promises of election tickets and contracts, stating defections are driven by personal interests, not internal party issues. He noted that defecting lawmakers, especially in the National Assembly, could face legal action since they swore affidavits to the PDP before contesting. The party plans to challenge these defections in federal courts, aiming to have defectors lose their seats.

The PDP official discussed internal party tensions, noting a debate over zoning: some members support shifting power to the south, while others from the north want it retained in the north.

The speaker downplays internal issues within the PDP, asserting that media exaggerates the situation. He claims the party remains stable, having successfully held congresses in most states, with only a few facing problems. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of regional coalitions among governors in Nigerian politics.

Governors have distinct coalitions in the north and south, making coalitions the key focus. The PDP has also identified all defectors and plans to take legal action against them, with cases expected to be announced soon.
