The old perimeter wall of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, collapsed, allowing seven prisoners to escape.
Following Tuesday’s nighttime downpour, they managed to flee. The wall’s structural failure during the storm caused the breach, which happened at around 2:00 am.
This was revealed in a statement by NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar, who also said that authorities have since begun a manhunt to find and apprehend the escapees.
An immediate investigation into the event has been requested by Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, the Controller General of Corrections.
According to the statement, he reassured the people that measures are being stepped up in coordination with local community leaders and other security agencies.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service has launched an expansive manhunt following the rainfall that breached the security of its facility at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ilesa, Osun State.
