The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned an “unprovoked attack” on its operatives from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), which occurred on Monday, May 20, 2025, at Okhuimwun Community in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the incident took place in the early hours of May 20, when the operatives were passing through Edo State on their way from Lagos. They encountered a violent mob that had barricaded the road near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis.

The mob reportedly blocked the road and proceeded to attack the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects. As a result, two personnel sustained serious injuries.

“The mob, in an unlawful display of aggression, attacked the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, inflicting serious injuries on two personnel,” the statement read.

Despite the life-threatening situation, Adejobi praised the officers for maintaining restraint and not retaliating with force. The injured officers have received medical attention and are in stable condition.

The Nigeria Police Force has expressed strong disapproval of such acts of violence and lawlessness directed at its personnel. Adejobi confirmed that investigations into the attack have already begun and assured that those responsible would face the full extent of the law.

The police command has urged the public to respect the rule of law and refrain from taking violent actions against law enforcement officers.
