FCTA, FIRS CLASH AS FCT OFFICIALS SEAL REVENUE SERVICE PROPERTY OVER UNPAID GROUND RENT
By Aishat Momoh. O.
A tense standoff occurred on Monday between officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the FCTA moved to seal a property occupied by the tax agency in Zone 5, Wuse, Abuja.
The FCTA enforcement team, led by the Director of Lands, Mr. Chijioke Nwankwoeze, was initially denied entry by security guards and some FIRS personnel. The confrontation unfolded as part of an ongoing crackdown by the FCTA on properties with revoked land titles due to non-payment of ground rent.
According to Nwankwoeze, the property in question is among the 4,794 whose titles were revoked in March 2025 following years of non-compliance. The administration had disclosed that over N6 billion in revenue was lost due to the failure of property owners to fulfill their ground rent obligations, some of which date back more than a decade.
While journalists were barred from accessing the premises during the altercation, FCTA officials were eventually permitted entry and proceeded to seal the property.
The enforcement operation is part of a broader initiative by the FCTA to recover unpaid dues and reassert control over defaulting properties across the Federal Capital Territory. Authorities have reiterated that the exercise is being conducted in full compliance with the law and will continue across all affected locations.
